Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called the 2027 election a crucial decision point for Nigerians, describing it as a choice between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the interests of the citizens. Speaking at the unveiling of the new Southwest zonal secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, dedicated to the late Soji Adagunodo, former PDP Southwest Chairman, Makinde asserted that the APC has failed to fulfill its promises.
“The APC has been in charge, yet they have let the country down. Nigerians must now decide if they wish to keep them in power or opt for change,” Makinde said, emphasizing that the election will be a referendum on APC’s leadership rather than traditional party rivalry. He urged Nigerians to unite in response to current hardships and work toward a change in leadership.
Addressing internal PDP challenges, Makinde stressed the need for unity among party members, saying, “The real adversaries are within, not among opposition parties.” He encouraged PDP leaders to resolve disputes and maintain party stability in the Southwest. When questioned about a potential presidential run, Makinde hinted at the possibility, stating, “I am old enough to make my own choices. The current state of the country will inform my decisions.”
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke echoed the call for unity, urging PDP members to “build bridges” within the party. He highlighted the importance of solidarity in upholding democratic values, emphasizing, “Our strength lies in unity. We must come together to serve the people.”
PDP’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, commended the leadership of the party’s governors, describing them as the “backbone” of the PDP and recognizing their commitment to democracy. Zonal chairman Kamorudeen Ajisafe, represented by Zonal Secretary Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, called for a unified push to unseat the ruling party.
Soji Adagunodo Jr., son of the late PDP leader, expressed gratitude for the tribute to his father, urging leaders to make the new secretariat a “solution house” for party and national issues. The event drew prominent figures, including Oyo State Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal, Ogun PDP 2023 governorship candidate Chief Ladi Adebutu, Ondo State PDP governorship candidate Agboola Ajayi, and former governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Samuel Ortom. Notable attendees like Senator Monsurat Sunmonu and Senator Gbenga Babalola highlighted the PDP’s unity and influence in the Southwest region.
