Governor Alia Seeks CBN’s Support for Benue State’s Economic Development

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for assistance in optimizing the state’s economy, aiming to foster growth, create jobs, and develop critical infrastructure and technology.
During a visit to CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, Governor Alia highlighted Benue’s abundant opportunities in agriculture, solid minerals, and other sectors. He requested the CBN’s support to harness these opportunities for both local and international markets.
According to a statement from Bridget Tikyaa, the principal special assistant to the governor on media, publicity, and communications strategy, Governor Alia also sought the CBN’s expertise in developing comprehensive data systems across key development areas. This is intended to aid in strategic planning and enhance investor engagement.
The governor introduced the state’s newly established Bureau of Statistics, designed to enhance statistical systems, boost the economy through job creation and foreign exchange activities, and support the agricultural sector.
“We seek your support in providing system strengthening and equipment infrastructure for the State Bureau of Statistics. This support will not only benefit the Benue State government but will also enhance the capabilities of the CBN and Nigeria at large. A well-supported statistical system provides reliable data to guide our economic policies and development strategies,” Governor Alia stated.
In response, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso praised Governor Alia for his proactive approach and the state’s efforts in economic diversification. Cardoso assured that the Central Bank would take the necessary steps to manage the nation’s rising inflation and reiterated the apex bank’s commitment to maintaining price stability, despite the increase in headline inflation observed in June 2024.
