The singing of Russia’s national anthem and flag in forthcoming international matches has been banned by FIFA, the world football governing body.
FIFA made the decision in response to Russia’s military troops invading Ukraine on President Vladimir Putin’s orders.
Over the weekend, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, and England declared that they would not be playing Russia.
FIFA announced on Sunday that it will continue negotiations with other sporting organizations to assess if Russia should be barred from all competitions.
“FIFA would like to reiterate its condemnation of the use of force by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine,” the statement read.
“Violence is never a solution and FIFA expresses its deepest solidarity to all people affected by what is happening in Ukraine.
“FIFA will continue its ongoing dialogue with the International Olympic Committee, Uefa, and other sports organizations to determine any additional measures or sanctions, including potential exclusion from competitions, that shall be applied soon should the situation not be improving rapidly.
“FIFA’s thoughts remain with everybody affected by this shocking and worrying situation.”
Meanwhile, the English Football Association has stated that it will not play any international matches against Russia.
The Football Association has announced that it will continue to boycott matches against Russia for the foreseeable future.
