The federal government is preparing to deploy over 10,000 “agro rangers” to safeguard farmers across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This initiative, announced by presidential aide Olusegun Dada in a post on X on Sunday, is aimed at enhancing food security throughout the northern region and other parts of Nigeria.
According to Dada, the deployment will be conducted through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC). The Agro Rangers will be tasked with protecting farmlands, shielding farmers from increasing attacks, mediating conflicts between farmers and herders, and preventing the intentional destruction of farmland.
Dada emphasized the significant role of insecurity in the country’s ongoing food inflation crisis, noting that it has been a persistent challenge. “This collaboration between the NSCDC and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is expected to address a critical issue faced by farmers nationwide,” he stated.
In addition to the deployment, Dada mentioned that the government expects to receive over 5,000 advanced farming equipment as part of the initial phase of efforts to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s agricultural vision.
