FG to Crack Down on Irregular Migrants from August 1

The Federal Government has announced plans to take strict action against irregular migrants in Nigeria, beginning August 1, 2024.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during a meeting with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Abuja. He stated that a three-month grace period, from May 1 to August 1, would be given to allow migrants to regularize their status under the new Expatriate Administration System before enforcement begins.

Tunji-Ojo also warned companies against obstructing the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) from carrying out its duties, emphasizing that such actions would no longer be tolerated.

“The days when some companies irresponsibly block or avoid immigration laws are over. The private sector understands that, by law, the Immigration Service has a job to do, and they must be allowed to do it. Any company that tries to prevent them from carrying out their duties will face strict action,” he said.

The minister also addressed immigration service fees, stating that current charges were unsustainable. He revealed that after negotiations, adjustments had been made for certain citizenship and business-related activities, with the final breakdown set to be officially released by the ministry and NECA.
