FG Bows to Pressure, Reduces Telecom Tariff Hike to 35%

The Federal Government has scaled down the recent increase in telecommunications tariffs from 50% to 35% following intense pressure from organized labour and the public.

The decision was reached during a meeting between government officials and representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on Friday. The discussions focused on addressing concerns over rising telecom costs, which had sparked widespread backlash.

Sources indicate that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will soon make an official announcement regarding the tariff adjustment.

Labour unions and consumers had strongly opposed the increase, with the NLC rejecting it outright on February 12, arguing that it would disproportionately affect low-income Nigerians who rely on mobile communication for business and daily activities.

In response, the NLC issued an ultimatum demanding a reversal to the old tariff by the end of February 2025, threatening to shut down telecom operations nationwide from March 1 if their demands were not met.

With this latest development, stakeholders now await the NCC’s formal pronouncement on the revised tariff structure.
