FG, ASUU to Hold Crucial Talks on Monday to Prevent Potential Strike

The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing for a crucial meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) leadership on Monday, aiming to address the union’s demands and avert a potential strike in the country’s university system.
This development was announced by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during his appearance on the Beyond 100 Days program, which was broadcast on Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday. ASUU recently issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Ibadan. The ultimatum highlights ongoing concerns about unresolved issues affecting the university system.
“We received the notice of strike from ASUU on Monday and immediately began reviewing the issues. We will meet with ASUU to discuss these concerns on Monday,” Prof. Mamman confirmed. The Minister recognized the long-standing nature of some of ASUU’s demands, pointing to the 2009 agreement and challenges dating back to 1981.
He said, “We share ASUU’s vision for a robust university system, but it’s important to approach these issues pragmatically, recognizing what can be achieved immediately, in the short term, and over time.”
The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on several key issues, including the finalization of the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the 2021 draft by the Nimi Briggs Committee, the release of salaries withheld due to the 2022 strike action, and the funding for the revitalization of public universities.
Prof. Mamman also mentioned that the government is working closely with relevant agencies, such as the Ministry of Finance, to ensure the necessary financial commitments are met. He expressed hope that the discussions on Monday would yield positive outcomes.
