FCTA Seals PDP Headquarters Over 43-Year Ground Rent Debt

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday sealed the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Wuse, Abuja, over non-payment of ground rent spanning up to 43 years.

FCTA officials arrived at the party’s secretariat around 2:05 p.m. and initially requested to speak with those in charge. Before any engagement was made, the premises were sealed. Following a brief protest and a 15-minute standoff, the building was temporarily unsealed to allow staff to remove vehicles and personal belongings before being locked up again.

The move is part of a broader enforcement action following the recent revocation of 4,794 land titles across prime Abuja districts including Wuse, Maitama, Asokoro, Guzape, and Garki over unpaid ground rent ranging from 10 to 43 years.

At a briefing last Friday, senior FCTA officials, including Special Adviser on Public Communications Lere Olayinka, Director of Land Administration Chijioke Nwankwoeze, and Director of Development Control Mukhtar Galadima, announced that enforcement would begin on Monday, May 26.

“Ownership of the revoked 4,794 properties has already reverted to the FCTA. From Monday, the government will begin to take possession of these properties,” Nwankwoeze said.

He emphasized that the sealing of buildings and restriction of access is being carried out in line with existing legal frameworks. Responding to concerns about the legality of the revocations, FCTA officials maintained that no court has issued an order restraining enforcement.

Meanwhile, the FCTA is also reviewing records of other defaulters who owe ground rent between one and ten years. Those given a 21-day grace period to clear their debts will face similar enforcement actions if found non-compliant once evaluations are concluded.
