FCT Minister Approves Hiring of 34 Resident Doctors to Boost Healthcare Delivery

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a seven-year residency training program aimed at strengthening healthcare services in the FCT.

Mr. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to Olayinka, the 34 doctors are the first batch of 60 medical professionals approved for residency training in eight specialities across FCT Administration hospitals.

The breakdown of the newly recruited doctors includes:

·         Psychiatry: 5 doctors

·         Internal Medicine: 4 doctors

·         General Surgery: 1 doctor

·         Anesthesiology: 1 doctor

·         Family Medicine: 8 doctors

·         Ophthalmology: 6 doctors

·         Obstetrics and Gynaecology: 9 doctors

Olayinka emphasized that this initiative is the first of its kind outside the employees of the Health Management Board, thereby expanding opportunities for doctors and enhancing healthcare services in the FCT.

Additionally, the remaining 26 doctors will be recruited in due course by the FCT Civil Service Commission, with allocations across various medical fields, including psychiatry, internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, and paediatrics.

This move aligns with the administration’s commitment to improving medical care and ensuring competent hands are available to serve residents of the FCT.
