The FBI has classified a deadly explosion near a fertility clinic in Palm Springs as an “intentional act of terrorism,” following a blast Saturday morning that killed one person and injured four others. Investigators have not yet determined whether the act stemmed from domestic or international motives.
The explosion occurred just before 11 a.m. local time, less than a mile from downtown Palm Springs, in a commercial area that includes the American Reproductive Centers (ARC). Though the clinic sustained property damage, officials confirmed that no staff or patients were harmed. The source of the explosion appears to have been in or near a vehicle parked adjacent to the facility.
“This was a deliberate attack,” said Akil Davis, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. “As the investigation progresses, we will determine the nature of the terrorist threat.”
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills described “significant structural damage” to several surrounding buildings, with at least one structure rendered unstable. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Eyewitness Rhino Williams, a nearby restaurant owner, described the moment of the explosion. “At first, I thought a plane had crashed,” he said, recalling the chaos as he saw parts of a burning car and damaged building walls. He also observed what appeared to be a phone on a tripod—possibly used to record the explosion.
ARC later confirmed that its laboratory, including all stored eggs and embryos, remained secure and undamaged. “Our clinical operations and sensitive areas were not compromised,” the clinic said. However, founder Dr. Maher Abdallah noted that offices sustained damage. “Thank God no patients were scheduled today,” he told the Associated Press.
Governor Gavin Newsom said state agencies are coordinating with federal and local authorities. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has also been briefed on the situation.
The FBI stated it has identified a “person of interest” but clarified there is no active manhunt at this time. Palm Springs Mayor Ron De Harte confirmed reports that the explosion likely originated from or near a vehicle parked at the site.
The ARC clinic, a pioneer in reproductive services in the Coachella Valley, is known for its IVF, egg freezing, and surrogacy programs.
Authorities say the investigation remains active, with further updates expected as more details emerge.
