FBI Calls Michigan Synagogue Attack ‘Hezbollah-Inspired Terrorism’

Federal authorities have identified a deadly attack on a synagogue in Michigan as an act of terrorism inspired by Hezbollah, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Officials said Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon, carried out the March 9 assault at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Ghazali allegedly drove a truck loaded with gasoline and fireworks into the synagogue before opening fire with an AR-style rifle he had purchased just days earlier.

Authorities said Ghazali died by suicide after exchanging gunfire with security personnel when his vehicle became lodged inside the building. No other fatalities were reported.

Investigators revealed that shortly before the attack, Ghazali sent a video message to his sister in Lebanon, outlining his intentions and identifying the synagogue as a target. Officials believe she did not view the message until after the incident.

“This was a Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism deliberately targeting the Jewish community,” said Jennifer Runyan, the FBI’s special agent in charge in Detroit.

The incident has heightened concerns among law enforcement about the potential for ideologically driven attacks targeting religious communities within the United States.
