Fayose Urges Atiku to Exit Electoral Politics, Calls for Younger Leadership

Former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose has advised Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar to retire from future presidential contests. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose highlighted Atiku’s six previous presidential bids — in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 — and emphasized the need for younger political leaders in Nigeria.

Fayose remarked that Atiku, now 77, should consider stepping aside, particularly as he approaches 80. “By the time Asiwaju [Bola Tinubu] finishes, Atiku Abubakar will probably be 80 or 81. So what will be the attraction?” he questioned, urging him to leave the stage “while the ovation is loudest.” He noted that Nigerians increasingly desire a younger generation to lead the country.

Despite these suggestions, Atiku has shown no indication of stepping down, previously expressing his willingness to contest the 2027 election, provided he remains healthy. In contrast, Fayose pointed out the internal struggles within the PDP, which have weakened the party’s influence, allowing Labour Party’s Peter Obi to emerge as the leading voice in opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fayose lamented the PDP’s decline, questioning how the party could effectively challenge the APC when it is plagued by internal conflicts and diminishing relevance.
