Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili has set a new women’s 150m world record, clocking an astonishing 15.85 seconds to win the event at the Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Port Harcourt-born athlete shattered the previous record of 19.56 seconds set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018, becoming the first woman ever to run the distance in under 16 seconds.
Ofili, who also won the same event last year, dominated the race after the 50m mark, pulling ahead of the field and finishing well ahead of runner-up Tamari Davis, who posted a personal best.
“The Lord is good, and is marvellous in my sight. Honestly, I’m surprised with the time,” Ofili said post-race. “But I know I put in the work, I trust my coach, I trust his program, and I know at the right time the Lord would do it.”
She attributed her record-breaking run to a combination of faith, discipline, and a race plan designed to treat the 150m like a 100m sprint while staying relaxed.
No stranger to the record books, Ofili also holds the African 200m indoor record with a time of 22.36 seconds, set at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas in 2023.
