Falana Criticizes Police Over Stampede Deaths, Demands Compensation for Victims

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has blamed the Nigerian police for their failure to prevent recent stampedes that claimed 115 lives in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija. Falana called for compensation for the victims’ families and urged the government to address poverty and unemployment, which he identified as key drivers of crime.

Speaking at the inaugural Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series in Akure, Ondo State, Falana delivered a lecture titled “Security Sector Reform in Promoting Peace, Stability, and Development: The Ondo State Example.” The event commemorated the late former governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023.

Falana praised Akeredolu’s courage and commitment to justice, particularly his pivotal role in establishing the Amotekun security outfit. “Akeredolu’s boldness in setting up Amotekun, despite opposition from the Federal Government, has made Ondo State a model for security in Nigeria,” he said.

Condemning the police’s role in the stampedes, Falana stated, “The police failed to protect the people, and I hold them responsible. The government must compensate the families who lost their loved ones due to these failures.”

He called on Nigerians to honor Akeredolu’s legacy, describing him as a leader who exemplified integrity, democracy, and the rule of law.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also paid tribute to Akeredolu’s impactful leadership, pledging to sustain his predecessor’s vision. Aiyedatiwa highlighted initiatives such as completing abandoned projects, launching new road construction projects, implementing a N73,000 minimum wage for workers, and ensuring timely payment of salaries and pensions.

Chief Sehinde Arogbofa, Afenifere leader and chairman of the event, commended Aiyedatiwa for continuing the Amotekun initiative and urged further efforts to advance Akeredolu’s vision for security and development in Ondo State.
