Ex-Officer Brett Hankison Convicted of Violating Breonna Taylor’s Civil Rights in Deadly 2020 Raid

Former Kentucky police officer Brett Hankison, 47, has been found guilty of violating Breonna Taylor’s civil rights during a raid in March 2020 that led to her death. Hankison now faces a potential life sentence after a jury concluded he used excessive force against Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT.

This is Hankison’s third trial in connection to the incident but marks the first conviction for any officer involved in the case, which ignited nationwide protests for racial justice. The jury also acquitted Hankison on a separate charge concerning the civil rights of Taylor’s neighbors, who were affected by stray bullets during the raid.

After the verdict on Friday, Taylor’s family members were seen in tears in the courtroom. Although prosecutors sought Hankison’s immediate detention, the judge denied the request.

The jury, comprising five white men, one Black man, and six white women, began deliberating on Wednesday. The indictment charged Hankison with violating Taylor’s right to be free from unreasonable seizure and endangering her neighbors’ due process rights by firing into her apartment. Hankison defended his actions, claiming he was attempting to protect his fellow officers after Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired at officers who entered the apartment without announcing themselves.
