Elon Musk Sparks Controversy with Deleted Joke About Assassination of Biden and Harris, Secret Service Responds

The U.S. Secret Service has acknowledged a social media post by Elon Musk in which he remarked that “no one is even trying” to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk has since deleted the post, clarifying it was meant as a joke. The post, made on X (formerly Twitter), came just hours after a suspected assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course.

Musk, a known Trump ally, has been tapped by Trump to potentially lead a “government efficiency commission” if Trump is re-elected. Musk’s comment, accompanied by a raised eyebrow emoji, was met with widespread criticism on X, with some accusing him of inciting violence against the sitting President and Vice President.

The White House condemned the post, calling it “irresponsible” and stating that violence should never be encouraged or joked about. A Secret Service statement noted that while it doesn’t comment on specific intelligence, it is “aware” of the post and investigates all threats involving its protectees.

After removing the post, Musk admitted that jokes may not translate well online, tweeting that humor often depends on context and delivery. Musk has previously endorsed Trump and has been vocal in his criticisms of Biden and Harris on social media.
