El-Rufai Probe: ONSA Denies Toxic Substance Allegation

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has responded to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who had sought clarification over the alleged importation of a toxic chemical from Poland.

In a letter addressed to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, El-Rufai raised concerns regarding the procurement of approximately 10 kilograms of Thallium Sulphate, highlighting its extreme toxicity and tight regulatory controls. He requested information on the intended purpose, supplier identity, quantity, storage and security arrangements, regulatory oversight with agencies such as NAFDAC and NCDC, and any public-health risk mitigation plans.

El-Rufai stressed that his inquiry was made in good faith, aiming to ensure public safety, democratic accountability, and confidence in national institutions.

In response, ONSA, through Brigadier-General OM Adesuyi on behalf of the NSA, denied the allegation, asserting that the agency had neither procured nor initiated any process to purchase the substance. The letter further noted that the claim has been formally referred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for a thorough investigation. El-Rufai and other relevant parties will be invited to provide any evidence that may assist in the inquiry.

The letter concluded by assuring that due diligence would be observed in establishing the facts. El-Rufai is yet to publicly react to ONSA’s response, though a security aide reportedly received the communication on his behalf.
