EFCC Denies Political Links in Aisha Achimugu’s Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims linking its investigation of businesswoman Aisha Achimugu to political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In a statement released on Friday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that Achimugu’s legal troubles are unrelated to any political affiliations but stem from allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

“The EFCC wishes to state unequivocally that the investigations of Achimugu have no correlation of any kind with the two political actors. She is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering and has since been declared wanted by the commission,” the statement read.

The commission disclosed that its probe into Achimugu began in 2022. Though she initially secured a court injunction preventing her arrest or investigation, a Federal High Court in Abuja overturned the order on February 19, 2025, ruling that no judicial authority could obstruct law enforcement agencies from probing suspected crimes. The court also upheld an interim forfeiture order on her assets, which were suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Dismissing any political undertones, the EFCC stressed that “the case against her has no immediate or remote nexus with any politician or any veiled or open reference to any political engagement or transaction.”

Reaffirming its neutrality, the commission urged the public to disregard any claims suggesting political interference in its investigations.

“The EFCC is non-partisan and non-sectarian. We enjoin the public to continue to keep faith with the professionalism of the commission without imputing any extraneous consideration to its work,” the statement concluded.
