Edo Violence: ADC Accuses Ruling Party of Targeting Opposition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned a gun attack and alleged assassination attempt in Edo State targeting former governor John Oyegun, party leader Peter Obi, and Olumide Akpata, describing the ruling party as “proving to be a terrorist organisation.”

In a statement, National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said the incident reflects a disturbing pattern of political intimidation against the opposition. The party also accused Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo of making inflammatory claims and threats that could escalate tensions and undermine law and order.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, yesterday’s disturbing gun attack and assassination attempt targeting Chief John Oyegun, Mr. Peter Obi, and Mr. Olumide Akpata,” Abdullahi said. “This was not an isolated incident. It bears the unmistakable marks of a dangerous and escalating pattern of political intimidation and terror against our party across the country.”

The statement criticized the governor for remarks that allegedly threatened Peter Obi’s safety, accused the ADC of sponsoring cultism, and warned of property demolitions targeting opposition members. Abdullahi emphasized that Edo State “is not the personal property of any party or governor,” and affirmed that ADC members have constitutional rights to freedom of speech, assembly, and lawful self-defense.

The party warned that the responsibility for any harm to its leaders, members, or supporters “rests squarely with those who choose the path of provocation over peace.” Abdullahi added that the ADC is compiling cases of alleged acts of terrorism by the ruling APC and intends to report them to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights.
