Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced an increase in the minimum wage for state workers from N70,000 to N75,000, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
The governor revealed the new wage during his May Day speech at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, commending Edo workers for their vital role in the state’s development.
“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for all Edo workers,” Okpebholo stated. “This is a token of our appreciation, and we count on your continued dedication to build a better Edo.”
He highlighted achievements including converting over 1,000 casual workers to permanent staff, hiring 500 teachers, and reviewing 3,000 casual teachers for permanent employment. The government also recruited 450 clinical and non-clinical hospital staff and regularized 126 contract workers at Edo State Specialist Hospital. Additional milestones include clearing salary arrears for Edo Polytechnic staff, swearing in delayed judicial appointments, and introducing health insurance for retirees.
“Your welfare remains a priority. We are committed to prompt salary and pension payments, structured recruitment, and professional development,” Okpebholo assured.
Acting NLC Chairman, Edo chapter, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, praised the governor’s swift reforms, noting that within six months in office, Okpebholo had surpassed expectations. He also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s backing, citing ongoing and approved infrastructure projects, including the state’s first flyover and improvements to federal roads.
