ECOWAS Orders Deployment Of Standby Military Force Against Niger Coup

The restoration of constitutional order in the Niger Republic has been mandated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) thereby deploying its standby military force.
At the ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting in Abuja on Thursday, President of ECOWAS Omar Alieu Touray said this while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup.
Touray claims that the regional group reaffirmed its opposition to the military dictatorship in Niger and ordered the urgent enforcement and supervision of sanctions against it.
The resolution partly reads, “Direct the Committe of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand-by force with all its elements immediately.
“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
