Ebonyi Governor Urges Military Action Against Sit-at-Home Protests

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has urged the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, to take decisive action in ending the sit-at-home protests that have disrupted economic activities across the South-East.

The sit-at-home directive, enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) since 2021, has crippled businesses and movement, particularly on Mondays.

Speaking on Saturday during Major General Olatoye’s courtesy visit to the Government House in Abakaliki, Nwifuru called for a reward system to boost the morale of security personnel while commending their role in maintaining order.

In response, Major General Olatoye, who assumed office as GOC of the 82 Division on January 27, 2025, reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration and addressing security challenges.

“This visit allows me to familiarize myself with the operational environment, assess sector-specific challenges, and enhance cooperation among security agencies,” he said.

The governor’s call for military intervention underscores growing concerns over the economic toll of the prolonged protests and the urgent need for strategic security measures to restore normalcy in the region.
