Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Adeleke Olorunimbe Mamora, and the president of, the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) have canvassed active roles for women for Nigeria to develop economically.
They communicated at APWEN’s 22 national conferences and an annual general meeting with the theme: “Just Energy Transmission: Enabler for Sustainable Development in Nigeria” held in Abuja. Mamora who spoke on the theme of the event said “to move a country forward, you must bring everyone on board, particularly the women. As one of the guest speakers they say earlier on that when you educate a woman, you educate the entire country.
“We are saying that we must look at the reality on the ground for our problem that is what we are saying. And if you look at all the trouble spots all over the world, one of the fundamental underlying issues is the absence of justice. I’m saying that there is a need for the energy transition. It has to be within the ambit of the realities of our situation. That’s just the point.” According to him, this would identify opportunities for women in businesses across the energy sector in Africa. For the growth to be successful. Reports have shown that over 18 million jobs must be created to ensure sustainability and inclusion.
On her part, the president of APWEN, Engr Elizabeth Jumoke Eterigho said the greatest users of energy are women because they need it in their homes to take care of the house chores and to enhance their productivity. “So, for a nation develop, we need energy, as far as is a concern where are today there is a lot of poverty because of lack energy, unsustainable energy but what we are saying is this for us to move forward we must move from where we are into a new level and that is the energy transition we are talking about.
“So, if you want to transfer from one form to another you do it gradually, you cannot jump into it, you transmit it from one level to another. So now that we are using our normal fossil fuel energy and we want to move to renewable energy, there is a middle way in between. The middle way is to harness both the fossil fuel and the renewable combine and it is when you graduate that you can move completely into renewable energy,” she said.
