Dozens of congressional Democrats on Tuesday called for the removal of U.S. President Donald Trump following remarks in which he warned that “a whole civilization” could be wiped out if Iran failed to reach a deal with Washington.
More than 70 lawmakers—including several senators—urged action through either impeachment or the invocation of the 25th Amendment, arguing that Trump’s statements raised serious concerns about his fitness for office.
Sen. Ed Markey said Congress should immediately reconvene to begin impeachment proceedings.
“The House must pass articles of impeachment, and the Senate must vote to convict and remove the President,” Markey wrote in a statement on X. “Alternatively, the Cabinet and Vice President, with congressional concurrence, must invoke the 25th Amendment.”
Sen. Chris Murphy echoed those concerns, supporting calls to invoke the constitutional provision. “No president in control of his senses would publicly promise to eradicate an entire civilization,” he said.
Rep. Ro Khanna also called for immediate action, writing on social media: “We need to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump. Threatening war crimes is a blatant violation of our Constitution and the Geneva Conventions.” Khanna later reiterated his stance in a television interview, adding that “all options” should be considered.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The backlash followed a Truth Social post by Trump earlier Tuesday, in which he issued a stark warning to Iran ahead of an 8 p.m. ET deadline for reaching a new agreement with the United States.
