Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, on Wednesday.
Aniagwu said the decision was made in unison with PDP leaders and stakeholders in Delta, citing the need to foster unity, enhance security, and accelerate development as key reasons for the defection.
“This decision was taken to build on the bond of love in our state and advance the welfare and security of our people,” Aniagwu explained.
He described the defection as the only viable path toward political stability in the state, noting that aligning with the APC would enable better collaboration among stakeholders to fulfill the aspirations of Deltans.
In a metaphorical jab at the PDP, Aniagwu said, “The state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose taste has changed and there was a need for us to change the drinking pattern.”
He hinted at a major political declaration scheduled for Monday to officially formalize the governor’s defection and mark the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s politics.
Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Oborevwori, confirmed the defection with a succinct, “It is true.”
A viral video circulating on social media showed Governor Oborevwori being welcomed with chants of “on your mandate,” a popular anthem associated with President Bola Tinubu, further cementing the news of his alignment with the APC.
