Hundreds of residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have crossed into neighbouring Niger State after a brutal terrorist attack that reportedly claimed more than 176 lives, triggering mass displacement and fear across surrounding villages.
The assault, which began on Tuesday evening and stretched into Wednesday morning, left residents scrambling to escape as gunmen stormed the area. Families fled in haste, abandoning homes and belongings as panic spread through Woro and adjoining settlements.
A video that circulated online showed displaced villagers who sought refuge in Wawa town, Niger State. Several vehicles believed to have transported them from Kwara were parked nearby.
In the footage, displaced persons were seen resting under a makeshift tent by the roadside. While some sat on plastic chairs, others sat directly on the ground, appearing visibly exhausted. Women and children were clustered together, highlighting the humanitarian toll of the attack.
Confirming the situation, the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, ZulQharnain Musa, said Woro had been completely abandoned.
“The whole community has been deserted as of Saturday. Residents have absconded to neighbouring communities, including Niger State, Kaiama town, and some of those who escaped through the thick forest ended up in Baruten,” Musa said.
He added that security operatives had been deployed to stabilise the area following the attack.
“There is an army battalion currently stationed in the community as directed by President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
However, despite the military deployment, Musa noted that fear continues to keep residents away from their homes, as many displaced families remain reluctant to return due to concerns over possible renewed attacks and lingering uncertainty about their safety.
