Court Orders FG To Pay N100m For Violating Emefiele’s Rights

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ruled in favor of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, ordering the Federal Government to pay the sum of 100 million naira. This decision is a result of the violation of Emefiele’s right to personal liberty during his prolonged detention without trial.
The court declared the extended detention as a blatant violation of Emefiele’s fundamental rights and issued a restraining order against the Federal Government and its agents, preventing them from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.
The judgment was delivered in response to a fundamental human rights suit filed by the former CBN governor, who sought N1 billion in damages and requested the court to prevent further arrests or detentions by the respondents.
Emefiele was initially arrested on June 10, 2023, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
