The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has nullified the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro voided the proceedings and resolution of the assembly on January 13, 2025, which led to Obasa’s ouster.
Obasa was removed from office by a majority of lawmakers who accused him of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His removal paved the way for then-Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda to become the first female speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Upon returning to the country, Obasa rejected the decision, calling it illegal, and filed a lawsuit to challenge its validity. His removal triggered a political crisis within the assembly, drawing intervention from senior All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, including former Osun and Ogun State governors Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba.
After 49 days in office, Meranda stepped down as speaker during a plenary session held on March 3. Obasa was subsequently re-nominated and re-elected by his fellow lawmakers.
