Court Admits Video Evidence in Nnamdi Kanu’s Terrorism Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted key video evidence allegedly showing Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu making inflammatory statements, as his terrorism trial resumed on Wednesday.

Justice James Omotosho accepted into evidence a flash drive containing Facebook videos, a June 17, 2021 letter from former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), and a certificate of compliance.

In court, the prosecution — led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) — played video clips showing Kanu allegedly directing followers to attack security forces, burn police stations, and resist what he described as “Fulani domination.” The evidence was introduced through a Department of State Services (DSS) witness, identified only by the codename BBB.

The Attorney General’s letter, also admitted, had instructed the DSS to investigate Kanu on charges including conspiracy, murder, arson, and targeted killings of security operatives.

One video reportedly captured Kanu telling his audience:
“Any police officer you kill, go to their station and set it on fire. Kill them. They are janjaweeds. Start killing soldiers now, set ambush for them, dig holes on the roads so that when their vehicle comes it will somersault and they will die.”

Another clip dated May 30, 2021, showed Kanu ordering a total lockdown in the South-East to honor fallen Biafrans, warning residents to stay home or risk being killed.

Despite the gravity of the materials, Kanu’s lead defence counsel, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), raised no objection, saying it was important to allow the case to proceed.

Justice Omotosho adjourned the trial to today, May 8, for continuation.
