A Columbia University student detained by federal immigration agents Thursday morning was released later the same day after New York City’s mayor intervened with President Donald Trump, according to city officials.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Thursday afternoon that Trump informed him the student, Elaina Aghayeva, would be “released immediately” following a conversation between the two leaders.

Earlier in the day, Columbia officials said agents with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security entered an off-campus residential building shortly after 6 a.m. without presenting a warrant. In a video statement, acting university president Claire Shipman said five federal agents gained access by claiming they were local police searching for a missing child.

“They made their way to the apartment of the student they were targeting with the same story,” Shipman said, adding that security footage showed agents displaying photos of an alleged missing child while in the hallway. Once inside the apartment, Shipman said, it became apparent that the agents had misrepresented themselves. A university public safety officer repeatedly requested to see a warrant, she said, but none was produced.

Shipman described the incident as “frightening and fast-moving,” and condemned what she characterized as deceptive tactics used to gain entry.

In a statement, a DHS official identified Aghayeva as a native of Azerbaijan and said her student visa had been terminated in 2016 during the Obama administration for failing to attend classes. The agency said Homeland Security Investigations agents verbally identified themselves and wore visible badges, and that the building manager and the student’s roommate allowed officers into the apartment.

The statement did not directly address allegations that agents misrepresented their identities to enter the building.

According to DHS, Aghayeva has no pending appeals or immigration applications. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed her in removal proceedings and released her pending a future immigration hearing.

Mamdani, who met with Trump at the White House earlier Thursday, later said on social media that he raised the matter directly with the president before the student’s release was confirmed.
