Citing Massive Evidence Haul, Prosecutors Request Indefinite Trial Delay in Assassination Attempt on Trump

Federal prosecutors have requested an indefinite delay in scheduling the trial for Ryan Routh, the man charged in last month’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course. In a filing on Wednesday, they cited the massive amount of evidence gathered in the 17 days since Routh’s arrest.

Prosecutors asked Florida District Judge Aileen Cannon to designate the case as “complex,” revealing new details about the investigation. Over two weeks, they’ve interviewed hundreds of witnesses and executed 13 search warrants across Florida, Hawaii, and North Carolina, seizing hundreds of pieces of evidence, including multiple electronic devices.

Investigators are dealing with a substantial volume of digital material—about 4,000 terabytes of videos, images, text, and audio files—requiring extensive review. They’re also conducting forensic tests on ballistics, fingerprints, and DNA, and plan to prepare expert witnesses to testify at trial.

Routh’s defense team did not oppose the government’s request to delay the trial. Routh, 58, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in West Palm Beach on Monday.
