The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians about individuals and groups falsely claiming to represent the bank in offering contracts, loans, grants, and intervention funds.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Hakama Sidi Ali, the acting director of corporate communications at the CBN, reiterated the warning first issued on November 18, 2024. Despite this advisory, fraudulent activities persist.
“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn once again to the activities of individuals and groups falsely claiming to represent or act on behalf of the CBN,” the statement reads.
These fraudulent entities continue to circulate fictitious offers of financial benefits such as contracts, loans, grants, and intervention funds, which they falsely claim are issued or endorsed by the CBN.
The CBN stressed that it has not authorized, licensed, or appointed any individual, group, or organization to act as an intermediary for such offers. It further clarified that the bank does not award contracts or disburse funds through unsolicited communications, including emails, phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, or social media platforms.
The bank also emphasized that it never demands any form of payment in exchange for financial benefits.
“If you are approached by individuals or entities making such claims, we strongly advise that you do not engage with them,” the CBN stated. “Instead, report these incidents immediately to the relevant law enforcement agencies or the nearest CBN branch.”
The CBN reiterated its commitment to protecting the financial interests of Nigerians and continues to work closely with security agencies to combat fraud.
