About twenty-two senators had threatened to leave the ruling party after they were unable to secure the party’s re-election ahead of the general elections in 2023.
Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the 9th Senate, who led the aggrieved members, claimed that they felt disenfranchised by the procedure.
While speaking to the irate Senators present at the meeting, President Buhari urged them to exercise restraint in their decision to leave the APC.
Some Senators have left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
In his statement, Buhari said that the National Assembly majority held by the APC was in danger due to the Lawmakers’ intention to leave the party.
After the meeting, Kalu indicated that the irate Lawmakers would not leave the party before the 2023 election.
The Chief Whip said in a statement, “Earlier this afternoon, I led the 22 aggrieved Senators and members of the All Progressive Congress to President Muhammad Buhari, GCFR.”
“Our meeting with Mr. President was successful and the issue of decamping from our party has been laid to rest.”
