Elder statesman and former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has sounded the alarm over the party’s future, blaming selfish interests for its growing challenges. He warned that these issues threaten the PDP’s role as Nigeria’s main opposition party and could undermine its ability to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Addressing a news conference in Lagos on Thursday during his 79th birthday celebration, George called on PDP elders to unite and rescue the party from what he described as an imminent crisis.
“As a loyal party man who lives, thinks, talks, breathes, and defends PDP, I have never left this party since it was formed. Today gives me a great opportunity to deliberate on the future of our party,” he said.
Chief George expressed disappointment over the state of the PDP, lamenting that its disloyalty and internal divisions dishonor the party’s founding ideals. “I owe it a duty to declare openly that all is not well with our party. In fact, our party is derailing,” he declared.
He emphasized that resolving these internal issues should be a priority during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for November 28 in Abuja. “If the PDP must rescue Nigerians from the vicious grip of APC in 2027, this must be a major agenda during our NEC meeting in Abuja,” he urged.
George also linked the PDP’s internal crisis to Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic problems, warning that the party’s continued divisions could jeopardize its ability to provide effective opposition.
PDP elders are set to convene in Abuja later this month to chart a way forward, with Chief Bode George’s candid remarks adding urgency to their deliberations.
