In an exclusive interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, President Joe Biden acknowledged that last week’s debate was a “bad episode” but firmly addressed concerns about his age and mental fitness.
During the 22-minute conversation, Stephanopoulos repeatedly questioned Biden about his debate performance against Donald Trump, recent reports of frequent lapses, and what measures he would take to reassure the American public.
“Are you the same man today that you were when you took office three-and-a-half years ago?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“In terms of successes, yes,” Biden replied. “I was the guy who put together a peace plan for the Middle East that may be coming to fruition. I expanded NATO. I grew the economy. All the individual accomplishments were either my ideas or ones I fulfilled. I moved forward.”
“Do you dispute that there have been more lapses, especially in the last several months?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“Can I run the 100 meters in 10 seconds? No. But I’m still in good shape,” Biden responded.
Stephanopoulos followed up, asking, “Are you more frail?”
“No,” Biden said firmly.
