Bayer Leverkusen Clinch Historic Bundesliga Title with 5-0 Victory

Bayer Leverkusen made history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever Bundesliga title in their 120-year history with a commanding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen, breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year stranglehold on the German top flight.
Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen squad showed no signs of nerves as they dominated the match, knowing that victory would secure the title with five games to spare.
Florian Wirtz stole the show with a hat-trick, while goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka added to Leverkusen’s stunning unbeaten run, which now extends to 43 games in all competitions.
The long-awaited title victory sheds Leverkusen’s unwanted ‘Neverkusen’ nickname for good, marking a triumphant moment after five second-place finishes in their history.

The jubilant scenes began with fans storming the pitch prematurely, prompting players to usher them back to the sidelines before the final whistle.
Leverkusen now sit comfortably atop the Bundesliga table with 79 points, the best tally after 29 games in German league history, securing a 16-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich.
The celebrations started early as Leverkusen’s bus arrived at the stadium through a sea of black and red-clad fans, with temporary signs along the main road honoring coach Xabi Alonso.
Despite looking ahead to Thursday’s Europa League trip to London, Alonso made seven changes to his starting XI, with Boniface making a standout performance in his first start since mid-December.
A penalty from Boniface put Leverkusen ahead in the first half, followed by a long-range rocket from Xhaka and two stunning goals from substitute Wirtz in the second half.
The victory not only secured the Bundesliga title but also marked Leverkusen’s transformation from nearly men to champions in style.
In another Bundesliga match earlier on Sunday, Freiburg secured a 1-0 win at Darmstadt, pushing the last-placed hosts closer to immediate relegation with five games remaining.
