The Bauchi State Government has expressed shock over the arrest of the state’s Accountant General, Sirajo Jaja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, the government criticized the manner of the arrest, which occurred while Jaja was attending the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting.
The government noted that the EFCC’s action disregarded an ongoing investigation by the Bauchi State Anti-Corruption Agency, led by retired DIG Sani Mohammed, a former EFCC officer. This local probe had already resulted in the removal of the previous Accountant General and several permanent secretaries.
Raising concerns over the timing and approach of the arrest, the Bauchi government described it as unnecessary sensationalism and a potential political witch-hunt.
“The conduct of the EFCC in this matter raises serious concerns. The sensationalism, politicization, and media trial surrounding the arrest of a government official who, if invited, would have willingly cooperated with the Commission, have created unnecessary drama and suspicion,” the statement read.
While reaffirming its commitment to transparency, the Bauchi government insisted on fairness and due process, emphasizing its record as one of the most transparent in public financial management.
The government vowed to explore all legal avenues to ensure justice for its officials while pledging cooperation with the EFCC, expecting fairness in return.
