Atiku Pushes for Mega Political Alliance to Challenge Tinubu’s Government

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced plans to lead a wide-ranging political coalition comprising key stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) in a bid to confront what he described as President Bola Tinubu’s “incompetent and inefficient” administration.

Atiku made the declaration during a stakeholder meeting in Abuja with political leaders from Kogi East Senatorial Zone, led by former Deputy Governor Simon Achuba. Discussions at the meeting also focused on the growing insecurity across the country and the imperative of northern unity.

“There is an urgent need for collaboration across party lines to rescue Nigeria from the failures of this administration,” Atiku stated, emphasizing the importance of strategic unity to deliver the country from its current challenges.

Recalling his tenure as Vice President, Atiku cited the PDP’s swift handling of the early Boko Haram insurgency, contrasting it with what he sees as the Tinubu administration’s lack of political will to address today’s security threats.

Amid Atiku’s coalition push, tensions continue to escalate within the PDP. Former Deputy National Chairman Olabode George issued a stern warning ahead of the party’s crucial May 27, 2025, meeting, calling for urgent internal reforms and adherence to zoning principles.

“If some people think the PDP is their personal property, the party will cease to exist,” George said in an interview with The Guardian, calling out the undue influence of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which he argued is “only advisory” and lacks constitutional authority.

He also urged Senator Bukola Saraki, chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, to act with tact and wisdom in navigating the crisis.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro appealed for calm, particularly from the South-East PDP caucus, urging members to respect the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on party leadership matters.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time, Moro linked the party’s internal crisis to the dual role of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who contested for a governorship position while retaining his role as PDP National Secretary. He emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling reaffirmed that only the party has the authority to determine its leadership structure.

The court’s verdict voided the appointment of Sunday Udeh-Okoye as Anyanwu’s replacement, deepening internal divisions and highlighting the pressing need for reconciliation within the party.
