The international passport of suspended Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has reportedly been seized by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Recall that Emefiele was suspended from his position as the apex bank boss by President Bola Tinubu on Friday. On Saturday, he was arrested in Lagos by DSS operatives and taken in a private jet to Abuja.
A DSS source told The Punch on Sunday that the suspended CBN boss’s travel documents had been seized pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
He stated that Emefiele’s passport was seized as standard procedure, adding that the suspended CBN governor has been on the watch list of the service for a long time.
The source added that the office and residence of the suspended apex bank governor would be searched for documents that can aid the ongoing investigation.
He said, “Of course, Emefiele’s travel document would be confiscated as part of the standard process pending the conclusion of our investigation. Also, as part of the investigation, his house and office would be searched for documents that can aid the ongoing investigation on his management of the CBN.”
The DSS source also disclosed that other top directors of the CBN might also be invited or arrested for questioning their roles in the administration of the apex bank.
He also said that the secret police might reexamine the criminal allegations it had previously brought against Emefiele, which had to do with fraud and financing terrorism.
A warrant for Emefiele’s arrest had already been sought by the secret police, but Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, was not persuaded by their case.
The DSS will also look into Emefiele’s mismanagement of the Anchor Borrowers Program, a CBN subsidiary, and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending.
*Emefiele: DSS Asked To Arrest MDAs Under Buhari-led Administration*
Timi Frank, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy national publicity secretary, has asked that the Department of State Services (DSS) arrest and prosecute the heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
This was said by the chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in response to the DSS’s suspension and arrest of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Timi Frank claims that security organizations are required to arrest and bring charges against other senior government officials who are known to have abused their positions and allegedly stolen from the general populace’s money.
He listed the heads to include the Directors General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamo; Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello Koko; Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, and the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami.
Others are the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN. immediate-past Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, and ex-Minister of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq.
The politician stated that failure to arrest and prosecute these suspects known to have used their offices for selfish gain would show that the Tinubu’s administration is only out to witch-hunt Emefiele now under DSS custody.
He added that without moving against the powerful cabal, the Tinubu’s administration would have lent credence to insinuations that it is only up against Christian political office holders as recently alluded to by the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-rufai.
According to him, “Those who illegally benefited from illegal allocation of oil blocks and marginal oil fields championed by the NNPCL and the CBN’s Money Redesign Policy must be fished out and prosecuted.
“The execution of the National Social Investment Programme by Hajiya Farouk leaves a lot of questions to be answered. This is the time for Nigerians to know what really happened and how much was used to feed school pupils at home during COVID.
“The recent deception by Sirika who chattered an Ethiopian Airline Aircraft to deceive Nigerians that Nigeria Air has materialized must also be probed. Personal Assistant to ex-President Buhari, Tunde Sabiu must not be left out.”
