The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reconstituted the leadership of its 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, appointing former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, as chairman in a move that reshapes preparations for the party’s national convention.
The decision, announced on Friday, comes just days after Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma was unveiled as chairman of the key preparatory committee ahead of the APC’s March 27–28, 2026 national convention. Under the new arrangement, Uzodimma has been reassigned to serve as Treasurer of the committee.
In a statement signed by the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, the party said the committee was reconstituted following “further consultations with its leadership and national stakeholders,” noting that the changes are central to the build-up to the 2026 convention.
Political observers view the reshuffle as part of a broader revamp of the APC’s internal structures as it prepares for the 2026 congresses and the 2027 general elections, a move that has injected fresh suspense into the ruling party’s internal calendar.
The party also expanded the committee’s membership from 73 to 90, bringing in additional party chieftains, including Senator Barry Mpigi and other senior figures. According to the APC, the expansion was guided by zoning considerations and other strategic exigencies.
Under the revised structure, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim was named Vice Chairman I, while Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will serve as Vice Chairman II.
The sudden leadership change has added a new layer of intrigue to the APC’s convention preparations. As part of its wider organisational efforts, the party has extended its nationwide electronic membership registration exercise to February 8, 2026, to expand its base and update its membership database.
Ward congresses are now scheduled for February 18, with local government, state, zonal and national convention activities outlined in a revised timetable. Party leaders have described these steps as critical to strengthening internal democracy and renewing leadership structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The inclusion of additional figures in the expanded committee is also seen as an effort to accommodate wider stakeholder interests within the party. Analysts say the coming days will show whether the APC can effectively manage the high stakes of intra-party elections and maintain unity as the 2027 polls approach.
