On Sunday night in Abuja, governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had a closed-door meeting.
Meeting under the aegis of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the host governor and head Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi was joined by his counterparts from Kwara, Imo, Borno, Ebonyi, Lagos, and Zamfara.
Governors from Niger, Ogun, Cross River, Kogi, Nasarawa, Katsina, Plateau, Ekiti, Jigawa, and Kano states were among those present.
Their counterparts from Osun, Yobe, Gombe, and Kaduna states were still expected as of 10:00 p.m.
The conference was supposed to examine the party’s upcoming National Convention, its zoning scheme, direct primary, and other concerns, according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN).
The PGF stated at its November 9 meeting that allowing political parties to have direct primaries would overburden the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to NAN, the National Assembly passed Section 87 of the amended electoral bill, which is presently pending President Muhammadu Buhari’s signature.
That section stipulates mandatory direct primaries for all political parties.
However, at PGF’s last meeting, the Chair, Bagudu said that INEC’s decision to make it mandatory for political parties to elect their candidates for elective positions through direct primaries was undemocratic.
According to him, it will limit the parties ability to choose their desired options.
Indirect primaries use the employment of delegates who are usually leaders and executives at the ward, local government, and state levels to elect the party’s candidates at congress or convention, whereas direct primaries entail the participation of all party members in the selection of candidates.
