Former Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that Nigerian politicians are primarily in office to steal, kill, and cling to power, criticizing the deeply corrupt political system.
Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, Amaechi highlighted the lack of political integrity and the public’s short memory, which he said enables politicians to escape accountability.
“All we hear here is typical Nigeria, and you’re clapping. That’s why politicians get away with anything,” he remarked.
He accused politicians of exploiting the public’s forgetfulness, allowing them to commit crimes, including murder, without facing consequences.
Amaechi also referenced President Bola Tinubu, stating that Nigerians should not expect change as the political system remains unchanged.
“The politician in Nigeria is there to steal, to maim, to kill, and to remain in power,” he declared, urging citizens to remember the past and demand better governance.
Reflecting on his own political journey, Amaechi admitted that poverty pushed him into politics after graduating in 1987. He emphasized his crucial role in forming the All Progressives Congress (APC) and securing its victory in the 2015 elections.
“You can’t wish me away in the formation of APC or in how APC won the election,” he stated.
Amaechi also exposed the monetization of political rallies, recalling how attendees at an APC event in Lagos were previously seen wearing ‘Jonathan for President’ shirts. He revealed that crowds are often paid and could just as easily support another candidate if offered money.
“If tomorrow Tinubu comes with the same transport money, they will also come,” he recounted.
