Alex Otti Enhances ABSU Facilities with New Substation

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has inaugurated a 5MVA power substation at the Abia State University (ABSU) campus, aimed at restoring regular electricity supply to the institution. The event coincided with the university’s combined 30th–34th convocation ceremonies.

The governor explained that the substation, equipped with fault isolation provisions, distributes electricity across the campus through multiple sub-transformers. Initially running on gas turbines, the facility is planned to transition to renewable energy sources.

“The substation would ensure a steady power supply in the area, whenever there is a supply from the national grid,” Otti said, adding that the government had also signed a contract for a broader, independent power solution for ABSU and surrounding communities to stimulate socio-economic activities.

In addition to the power project, Governor Otti inaugurated rehabilitated Hostels A, B, and C, aimed at improving student welfare and the learning environment. He also performed the foundation-laying ceremony for a 5,000-capacity female hostel, as well as buildings for the faculties of Agriculture and Law.

“I am glad that the 5,000-capacity female hostel has taken off, construction is ongoing, and today we are here for the foundation-laying ceremony,” he stated, commending the university management for upgrading infrastructure in compliance with government directives.

The Vice-Chancellor of ABSU, Ndukwe Okeudo, praised the state government’s initiatives, noting that these interventions would significantly alleviate accommodation challenges and enhance the university’s overall capacity.

Governor Otti emphasized his administration’s commitment to people-oriented governance, saying, “The essence of government is to solve problems, not to create problems.”
