Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the 2025 US Open men’s singles title, reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, and secure his sixth Grand Slam crown.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, who also triumphed in New York in 2022, avenged his Wimbledon final loss to Sinner and strengthened his grip on their era-defining rivalry. It was the third straight Grand Slam final between the two, with Alcaraz prevailing once again.
The match began after a 30-minute delay caused by heightened security for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival at Arthur Ashe Stadium. When play got underway, Alcaraz raced through the opening set before Sinner hit back in the second. The Spaniard then dominated the third set and sealed victory in the fourth on his third championship point.
“It’s a great feeling. I’m working really hard just to lift this trophy. It’s my second one here but it’s still a dream come true,” Alcaraz said after the win.
Sinner, who entered the final on a 27-match hard-court Grand Slam winning streak, admitted he had no answer to Alcaraz’s brilliance. “I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more. He raised his level when he had to… He played better than me today,” the Italian said.
The result extends Alcaraz’s head-to-head advantage over Sinner to 10-5, including seven wins in their last eight meetings. Between them, the two have now claimed the last eight Grand Slam titles, each winning four, highlighting their dominance over men’s tennis.
Alcaraz also becomes the first man since Roger Federer (2004–2008) to win multiple US Open titles and only the fourth player to capture majors on hard courts, grass, and clay. The victory ends Sinner’s brief reign as world No. 1 and returns Alcaraz to the top of the rankings for the first time since September 2023.
The final drew a packed celebrity audience including Bruce Springsteen, Stephen Curry, Michael Douglas, and Tommy Hilfiger. But despite the distractions, Alcaraz stayed composed, further cementing his place as the face of a new generation in tennis.
