Akpabio: Tinubu Unaware of Nigeria’s Economic State Before Taking Office

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that President Bola Tinubu was not fully aware of the dire state of Nigeria’s economy before assuming office. Akpabio made this statement during his 2024 constituency briefing and empowerment programme at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium.

“Nigeria was on life support when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu took over,” Akpabio said. He shared a conversation he had with President Tinubu, where he asked the president about his excitement in taking office after seeing the country’s economic situation, as left by former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele. Tinubu responded, saying, “I must tell you, I didn’t know it was this bad.”

Despite the grim state of the economy, Akpabio expressed optimism about the ongoing reforms under President Tinubu’s leadership. He encouraged Nigerians to continue supporting the president’s efforts, stating, “You did it in Lagos, and you will do it again for Nigeria. It’s just a matter of time. We are praying for you, and God will grant you the wisdom to lead us to El Dorado.”

Akpabio also took the opportunity to address the beneficiaries of his empowerment programme, urging them to use the tools provided to improve their families’ economic well-being. He praised Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno for fostering peace and inclusivity in the state, noting that peace is essential for development.

“Without peace, there cannot be development. The governor has embraced all Akwa Ibom people, regardless of political affiliations,” Akpabio added. He assured that the foodstuff being distributed as part of the programme would reach beyond Ikot Ekpene, extending to other senatorial districts in the state.
