The assault targeted the Kyiv region and several other areas, including Kharkiv and Dnipro, causing extensive damage to critical infrastructure and prompting emergency repair operations.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reported that Russian forces launched at least 16 ballistic missiles toward the capital region, along with approximately 200 drones targeting locations across the country.
The ministry said some of the drones included jet-powered Shahed variants, adding that the attacks affected both energy installations and civilian buildings.
“Energy facilities were the main target, but a clinic, a school, a metro station and homes were also hit,” the ministry said in a statement, confirming that casualties had been reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 10 energy infrastructure facilities sustained damage during the strikes, disrupting electricity supplies to hundreds of thousands of families.
Emergency repair crews were dispatched to the affected locations to assess the destruction and begin restoring power.
Zelenskyy also expressed concern about the absence of advance intelligence regarding the incoming missile attack.
There was “no early warning from our partners” that the strike was imminent, the Ukrainian president said.
The statement raises questions about intelligence-sharing and early-warning coordination as Ukraine continues to defend its cities and critical infrastructure against Russian aerial attacks.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed carrying out what it described as a “massive” overnight strike but offered a different account of the intended targets.
Moscow claimed its forces had targeted facilities connected to Ukraine’s defense industry, including sites used to store cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Russian officials also said a data center in the Kyiv region had been struck.
The competing accounts of the targets could not be independently verified from the statements alone.
The latest Russian offensive follows a major Ukrainian attack over the weekend that reportedly targeted energy installations and oil and gas infrastructure inside Russia.
The exchange of strikes highlights the continuing escalation of attacks on energy-related facilities as both countries seek to weaken each other’s operational capabilities.
For Ukrainian civilians, the latest bombardment has brought renewed disruption to essential services, with hundreds of thousands of households facing electricity outages and emergency teams working to restore damaged infrastructure.
Authorities have not yet released a comprehensive casualty figure or a full assessment of the destruction caused by the overnight assault.
