President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as a leader whose influence on Nigeria remains significant.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Babangida as an outstanding military officer whose career culminated in his emergence as Nigeria’s leader following the 1985 coup.

The President said Babangida’s eight-year administration left lasting imprints on the country’s political, economic and geographical landscape.

“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape.”

Tinubu credited the former military leader with expanding the Nigerian economy, developing infrastructure and establishing agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.

He also attributed the continued existence of some states in the federation to Babangida’s “foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness.”

According to the President, Babangida’s contributions have secured him an enduring place in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu further commended the former military ruler for continuing to offer counsel to the country despite his retirement and quiet life at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,”

Tinubu said.

The President wished Babangida continued good health and strength, praying that Almighty Allah would grant him many more years.
