Iyabo Obasanjo Returns To PDP Days After Quitting APC

A fresh political twist has emerged in Ogun State as former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has made a dramatic return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) barely a week after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Ogun Central lawmaker rejoined the PDP after exiting the APC, where she had sought the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election.

Iyabo had joined the APC in January, marking her return to active politics after a 15-year absence, and subsequently declared interest in the Ogun governorship race. However, she resigned from the ruling party after losing the ticket, citing rejection, disrespect, and alleged maltreatment by the party leadership in the state.

Her return to the PDP became evident on Monday when she made a surprise appearance at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta during the unveiling of the PDP deputy governorship candidate. Party members and leaders welcomed her enthusiastically as she participated in the event alongside the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.

Addressing party faithful, Iyabo expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in the 2027 governorship election, describing Adebutu as the state’s incoming governor.

“I actually have a lot to say, there are many people that we shall call out, but I won’t say anything now until you organise that official welcome back into the party,” she said.

She also congratulated the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Dr. Lateefat Kolapo-Sowunmi, and praised Adebutu’s persistence in pursuing the governorship seat.

Iyabo’s decision to leave the APC followed her dissatisfaction with the process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.

In her resignation letter, she alleged that party leaders failed to consult her despite earlier assurances that stakeholders would be involved in the consensus arrangement. She further claimed that some of her supporters were denied access to the venue where the candidate was announced.

The former Ogun State Commissioner for Health said the developments reinforced her feeling of exclusion within the APC and ultimately influenced her decision to leave the party.

Iyabo, who represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011, is expected to formally complete her return to the PDP at a reception scheduled by the party.
