7.4-Magnitude Quake Triggers Small Tsunami Waves in Indonesia, One Dead

A powerful earthquake struck waters off Indonesia early Thursday, triggering small tsunami waves, damaging buildings, and leaving at least one person dead, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake measured 7.4 in magnitude and was centered in the Molucca Sea at a depth of about 35 kilometers (22 miles).

Tsunami waves were detected at multiple monitoring stations shortly after the quake. Authorities recorded waves of up to 30 centimeters (about one foot) in West Halmahera and 20 centimeters in Bitung, according to Indonesia’s meteorological agency.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said smaller waves were also observed in the southern Philippines, but no broader tsunami threat was identified.

Residents in coastal areas, including Bitung in North Sulawesi and Ternate in North Maluku, reported strong shaking lasting up to 20 seconds.

Initial damage assessments indicated light to moderate structural damage in parts of Ternate, including a church and several homes. Authorities are continuing to evaluate the full extent of the destruction.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency confirmed that a 70-year-old woman was killed in Minahasa district, while another person sustained injuries.

Emergency teams remain on alert as aftershocks are possible in the region, which lies along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
