Super Falcons Set Up Zambia Clash After Goalless Draw with Algeria; Flying Eagles Cruise into WAFU B Semis

Nigeria’s Super Falcons were held to a 0-0 draw by Algeria’s Lady Fennecs in their final Group B fixture at the 13th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday in Casablanca. The result confirmed a quarter-final showdown with Zambia’s Copper Queens.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Falcons were unable to break down a resolute Algerian defense. The draw, while disappointing for the nine-time champions, marked a historic milestone for Algeria, who advanced to the WAFCON quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Head Coach Justine Madugu rotated his squad significantly, making eight changes from the team that beat Botswana on Thursday. The reshuffled lineup featured Chinwendu Ihezuo, Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega.

Ordega was particularly lively in the first half, nearly setting up a goal with a dangerous cross. In the second half, Rasheedat Ajibade, Esther Okoronkwo, and Echegini all had chances to score, but were thwarted by a disciplined Algerian defense and the impressive performance of goalkeeper Chloe N’gazi Boumrar.

The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to a much-anticipated quarter-final clash with Zambia on Friday — a tie that promises high intensity and quality football.

In other football action, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles delivered a commanding performance to defeat Benin Republic’s Junior Cheetahs 4–1 in their second group game of the 2025 WAFU B U20 Boys Tournament.

Benin took the lead in the 24th minute with a well-taken free-kick by Junior Olugbade. However, the Flying Eagles equalised before halftime through Mohammed Abdullahi. Nigeria dominated the second half, with goals from Ezekiel Kpangu, Imrana Mohammed, and Abdulahi Majid completing the turnaround.

Defender Odinaka Okoro was named Man of the Match for his outstanding defensive display and contributions to the team’s momentum. The victory secures the Flying Eagles a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.
